Phyllis “June” Lawrence, age 95, of Richland Center, Wisconsin, died on Friday October 4, 2019, at Pine Valley Community Village in Richland Center.

She was born on August 14, 1924, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Walter Herman Flaig and Phyllis Maud Flaig, nee Holme.

June was married on April 7, 1945 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Howard Leslie Tyndall. They resided in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and New Berlin, Wisconsin from 1945 until they moved to Richland Center in 1977. Howard died on October 23, 1992 at Meriter Park Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.

June married Charles E. “Chuck” Lawrence of Richland Center, Wisconsin on January 14, 2001. Charles died on November 21, 2015 in Richland Center.

June was also preceded in death by her brother, Donald (June) Flaig of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and her daughter, Marcia Lorraine (Chuck) Allen of New Berlin, Wisconsin. June is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Ellen Olson of Arena, Wisconsin and Elaine Tyndall (Peter) Reichardt of Tomah, Wisconsin; two sons, Douglas Robert (Susan) Tyndall of Seeley Lake, Montana and Brian Charles (Susan) Tyndall of Waukesha, Wisconsin; 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

June is further survived by Charles Lawrence’s children Julie (Vern) Morris of Janesville, Wisconsin, Jim (Cindy) Lawrence of Random Lake, Wisconsin, Tom (Pam Taliaferro) Lawrence of Richland Center, and Bob (Barbara) Lawrence of Wausau, Wisconsin, together with eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and three great great-grandchildren.

June was a graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where she was an honor student and a state of Indiana champion in Latin. She was a talented harpist, and studied harp at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania after her graduation from high school. She was active in Girl Scouts as a troop leader and as the Nature Lady at Camp Chinook Girl Scout Camp in Waukesha, Wisconsin. She was an experienced outdoorswoman, camping in a tent and “under the stars” into her 70s. She excelled at gardening, home canning, baking, sewing, spinning, dyeing, weaving, knitting, furniture refinishing and upholstery, genealogy, and music performance. She was employed for many years as a Customer Service representative at the J.C. Penney distribution center in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

June and Howard were active in Lutheran Church activities in Milwaukee and Richland Center, including the Lutheran Handicapped Association in Milwaukee. They also served for many years as a foster home for Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, serving as foster parents to over 100 Milwaukee-area children during the 1970s.

Following their marriage in 2001, June and Charles were active Lutheran church members and together maintained a welcoming home for family and friends in Richland Center until they both moved to Pine Valley in Richland Center.

June was loved by her family, her coworkers, and all who knew her. She was legendary for her speed and expertise in pie baking. She was an avid conservationist and a strong supporter of international relief efforts including Lutheran World Relief, the Heifer Project, and Global Volunteers, with whom she travelled several times to the Mississippi Delta area. She volunteered in the Richland Center schools, reading to children. She was also a breast cancer survivor for more than 25 years.

A memorial service and dessert reception will be held Sunday, November 17, 2019 at 1 o’clock p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Richland Center. Rev. Michelle Elfers will officiate. There will be no visitation. June's family suggests memorials in her name be directed to Pine Valley Foundation or to St. John's Lutheran Church. The Pratt Funeral Service, Richland Center, is in charge of the arrangements.
