Obituary for Elizabeth 'Betty' G. Makovec

Elizabeth “Betty” G. Makovec, 81, of Muscoda, WI died Saturday, February 8, 2020, surrounded by her husband and children at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. She was born September 21, 1938 in Highland, WI, the daughter of Robert and Wilma (Delkamp) Kratochwill.

Betty attended Highland High School and graduated as valedictorian of her class. She married Joseph B. Makovec on April 4, 1959 at St. Philip Catholic Church in Highland, WI. Their love began with a Valentine's Day card and brought them over sixty years of inseparable love. It was truly love at first sight. Betty and Joe farmed for over 35 years in Muscoda, WI while raising their family. While they were farming, Betty owned and operated her own business, Betty’s Bakery. The bakery business grew out of her love of providing sweet treats for her family and friends and the surrounding community where they resided. She was well known for making “everyone’s” wedding cake. This was just one of Betty’s passions. She was a skillful seamstress making clothing for her children.

Betty’s husband and children always came first, however, she had several different hobbies, such as embroidery, wedding flower arrangements, and gardening just to name a few. After retiring from farming, Betty and Joe pursued another career together working as casino dealers at the Miss Marquette Riverboat Casino in Iowa and finished their working career at Ho Chunk Gaming in Wisconsin Dells. This new career adventure created more time to pursue another hobby that combined Betty’s artistic talents and Joe’s woodworking skills. Betty was a master and unbeatable card player, whether she was playing or dealing. She was known by many nicknames at Ho Chunk, such as Buzz Saw Betty, Killa, the Sniper and the Assassin. Despite all these nicknames, she was well loved and respected by all her patrons. She enjoyed her gambling trips with her husband and close friends.

Betty is survived by her husband Joe Makovec, Muscoda, WI. and children, Debora (Jose “Lucas”) Nader of Annapolis, MD, Susan (Bill) Rogers of Rockton, IL, Barbara (Terry) Pliner of Gotham, WI, Lisa (Thomas) Buell of Fort Worth, TX, Nancy (Mark) Kraemer of Richland Center WI, James Makovec of Muscoda WI, Joseph (Katelyn) Makovec of Norfolk VA.

Betty is also survived by her 14 grandchildren, Elizabeth (Chris) Nee Flynn, David (Capriana) Flowers, Steven (Diana) Flowers, Adam (Danielle) Flowers, Stacie Pliner, Michael Pliner, Thomas Buell, Stephen Buell, Jane Buell, Emily Buell, Hannah Kraemer, Josh Kraemer, Blake Makovec, Chase Makovec.
Betty is survived by 5 great-grandchildren, Coleman Flynn, Maisie Flynn, Arabella Flowers, Madison Flowers and Benjamin Flowers.

She is also survived by 5 brothers, Robert (Mary) Kratochwill, Tom (LuAnn) Kratochwill, Chuck (Debby) Kratochwill, Michael (Wanda) Kratochwill, Paul (Cheryl) Kratochwill, and 1 sister, Maggie (Randy) Herpel, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents Robert (1989) and Wilma (2007), her son Patrick Makovec (June 8, 1976), her sister Mary K. “Kay” Landen (2012), her great-granddaughter Eleanor Flynn (2013) and nephew Joshua Kratochwill (2017).
