Obituary for Alan John Dimenn

Alan John Dimenn was born September 16, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the grandson of Italian immigrants and raised by a single father with the help of his older sister, Kay. He dropped out of high school, but received his GED while serving in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was also an adjunct professor at Triton College in River Grove, IL teaching courses in horticulture.

He founded Lincoln Landscaping and Lincolnway Nursery in Harvard, Illinois in 1966. In 1998 he and his wife, Ev, moved the business to Hwy 14 outside Richland Center, WI. He was a natural landscape artist, and knew exactly the right plants for any location and the beauty into which they would mature over time. His canvass of work spanned nearly half a century and stretched from Chicago through the north and northwest Chicago suburbs and eventually into Richland County, Wisconsin.

He was a member of the American Association of Nurserymen and National Landscape Association and received the Seal of Integrity from the Illinois Landscape Contractors Association.

In addition to his brilliance with plants, he was skilled at crafting things from reclaimed materials, including buildings and vehicles.

Beyond his business, he was a volunteer with Head Start, volunteered with the Hoffman Estates, IL fire department, served on the Park Board in Harvard, IL, served as a board member for the First United Methodist Church in Harvard, IL, sat on the Richland Center, WI Chamber of Commerce, and received a honorary degree from the Future Farmers of America in Illinois.

One of his favorite roles was playing Santa Claus for local children in Richland Center. He was also an avid fan of Abraham Lincoln.

He is survived by his wife Evie., his daughters Susan (William) Dimenn Deigaard of Houston, Texas and Kerria (Jeremy Pollard) Dimenn of Richardson, Texas; his granddaughters Audrey and Adele Deigaard, his first wife Jacqueline ‘Jackie’ Morgan, as well as his stepsons Kris Lanphier of Harrison, Arkansas, Eric Lanphier of Beaver Dam, WI, Mark Lanphier of Richland Center, and Jeff (Amy) Lanphier of Beaver Dam; step-granddaughters Audria and Jayna Lanphier of Beaver Dam; daughter-in-law: Kim Inks of Waupun, WI, sister Catherine 'Kay' (Vic) Bevan of Tucson, Arizona. sister-in-law: Linda Dennis of Belvidere, Illinois;

His favorite places to be were in the fields of the nursery or tinkering in his barn. Al loved these hills in Richland County and felt comforted by the natural environment they provided around him.

No formal services will be held. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.
