Erma Faye Surrem

Erma Faye (Hipenbecker) Surrem, 73, of Richland Center was lifted into the arms of her Lord, Thursday, August 22, 2013 after a six year struggle with frontal-temporal lobe dementia. Erma’s mind and body are now whole again and she is singing passionately in the choir of heavenly angels. She was born January 12, 1940 the daughter of Norbert and Addanell (Harris) Hipenbecker. She graduated from Muscoda High School as Valedictorian in 1958, UW Platteville in 1962 and later received her Masters in Music from Valparaiso University. On June 25, 1966 Erma married John Surrem in Muscoda at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. They welcomed their only daughter Paula Lynne on June 6, 1970. She dedicated many years to teaching music, piano, and directing choir in Milwaukee and Richland Center. Erma had a servant heart and lived passionately. She enjoyed playing with her four grandchildren every chance she could. Erma was very active in church organizations and substitute teaching. She enjoyed gardening, baking Christmas cookies, and canning.

Erma is survived by her husband of 47 years, John of Richland Center, daughter, Paula (Kyle) Menzel of Duluth, Minnesota, four grandchildren, Hailey, Rachel, Megan, and Peyton Menzel, brothers, Dennis (Beverly) Hipenbecker of Wauwatosa, Richard (Kristi) Hipenbecker of Mount Horeb, brother-in-law, Jim Hedrick of Cloquet, Minnesota, many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents Norbert and Addanell Hipenbecker, sister Linda Hedrick, in laws Edmund and Clara Surrem, sister and brother-in-law Emily and Gordon Landphier, niece Diane Landphier, and nephew Scott Landphier.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at 2:00 PM at the Five Points Lutheran Church. Burial will be held in the Five Points Cemetery. Friends may call at the Pratt Memorial Chapel on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM or at the Five Points Lutheran Church from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at 2:00 PM. The family suggests memorials be directed to the Five Points Lutheran Church. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.
